CAM135

Camcorder filter app · video

A camcorder filter app that records instead of editing.

CAM135 is a camcorder filter app for iPhone and Android. It records new video through the look: seven camcorders from Super 8 to Mini DV, and a VHS look that prints its own clock and date. It does not filter clips already in your library.

Your first 30 photos and videos are free with everything unlocked, then $19.99 once.

VHS · SP
The VHS look in the camcorder filter app, drawn on a test pattern: a red disc and a cream bar on a dark gray field with fine horizontal lines, a tracking band across the bottom, and a two-line white clock and date reading 9:41 PM, AUG 31 2026

01Seven camcorders

Pick the camcorder.

Each of the seven has its own color, its own grain and its own darkening toward the corners. They differ in how much of each.

Canon 514XL · Super 8
Warm, punchy contrast, coarse grain and dark corners. The only camcorder of the seven with a light leak.
Bolex H16 · 16mm
Muted color, firm contrast, visible grain and corners that fall off.
JVC GR-C1 · VHS-C
Pale, flat color with faded blacks. The washed-out family tape, without the VHS look's raster lines.
Sony Handycam TR55 · Video 8
Close to neutral color, a little soft in contrast, with gentle grain.
Sony Hi8 · metal tape
Near-true color, light grain and gentle corner falloff.
Sony DCR-PC100 · Mini DV
Almost no grain and a slight cool shift in color. The cleanest of the seven.
Fisher-Price PXL-2000 · lo-fi
Black and white, high contrast, the heaviest grain and the darkest corners of the seven.

You frame through the look. Stop, and the phone develops the take, a short wait. The filter never uploads anything; cloud backup, if you buy the monthly plan, is separate.

02The VHS look

Then the VHS tape.

A separate pick on the camera shelf, video only. It is a tape played back rather than a camera: no film, only what the tape did to the picture.

Untreated
A test pattern of seven bright color bars straight off the phone's sensor, clean and saturated
TEST PATTERNPHONE
VHS look
The same seven color bars through the VHS look: duller, warmer and grainy, with fine horizontal raster lines across them
VHS · SPCAM135
Cast
Cream whites over faded blacks, with the color drained.
Raster
240 lines across the picture.
Tracking
A tear along the bottom, a band that drifts up the frame and dropouts.
Smear
Color smeared sideways, added in the saved file.

None of that belongs to the seven camcorders. The raster, the tracking and the clock are the VHS look’s alone.

RENDERS MADE BY THE APP'S OWN CODE ON A TEST PATTERN, AS THE VIEWFINDER DRAWS IT · THE SAVED FILE ALSO SMEARS COLOR SIDEWAYS

03The date

The date in the corner.

A video carries a date in its corner, burned into the file, unless you switch it off.

Seven camcorders
The date in the face and layout picked on the DATE STAMP sheet: six faces, seven layouts.
VHS look
Its own two lines, a 12-hour clock over the date, such as 9:41 PM over AUG 31 2026, in white blocky type with a hard black shadow. It ignores the sheet.
DATE switch
Turns the stamp off for new videos. A take that already carries it keeps it, because it is in the picture.

The date comes from your phone’s clock. It is a look, not a record. For photos, see the date stamp camera app guide.

04Plainly

A camcorder filter app for new video, not old clips.

CAM135 records through the look. It cannot apply the look to a clip you already shot.

The batch Filter takes photos only, up to 20 at a time. Frames and the AI photo editor are photos only too. If you want an old camera video effect on footage already in your library, this is not the tool. If you want to film something new that way, it is.

It is an app, not hardware. If you were looking for a VHS camcorder or a vintage video camera to buy, this is neither: it is a vintage camcorder app on the phone you already carry, and seven of the 23 cameras in the vintage camera app. The decade-by-decade view is on the retro camera app page.

Quality
1080p, on both lenses.
Sound
The microphone is on. The sound is kept as recorded.
Saving
Save the finished video to your photo library or share it.

For stills, see the 11 film filters.

05Price

What it costs.

The first 30 photos and videos are free with everything unlocked. After that, $19.99 once.

Then 3 films and 3 cameras stay free: Portra 400, CineStill 800T and Tri-X 400, with the Lomo LC-A, Holga 120N and Rolleiflex 2.8F. None of them is a video camera, so after the first 30, recording with any of the seven camcorders or the VHS look needs the $19.99 unlock. $7.99 / month is the same unlock plus cloud backup. No watermark, no ads.

Questions

The short answers.

Does it add a camcorder filter to a video I already shot?
No. CAM135 records new video through the look. The batch Filter takes photos only, and a clip in your photo library cannot be brought in.
Is the look live while I film?
You frame through it. The viewfinder shows the color, grain and corners, the Super 8's light leak, and the VHS look's raster lines and tracking band. When you stop, the phone develops the take. The filter never uploads anything; cloud backup, if you buy the monthly plan, is separate. The VHS look's sideways color smear is added then; the viewfinder does not draw it.
Does it record sound?
Yes. The microphone is on, and the sound is copied into the finished video untouched. The app does not add tape noise to it.
Which one is the VHS look?
It is a separate pick from the seven camcorders: raster lines, a tracking band, dropouts, color smeared sideways and its own clock over the date. The JVC GR-C1 is the VHS-C camcorder. It has the color, grain and corners, without the raster.
How good is the video?
Takes record at 1080p, on both the back and front lenses. The date goes into the file, and the DATE switch turns it off for new videos.
Is it free?
Your first 30 photos and videos are free with everything unlocked. After that, none of the seven camcorders or the VHS look is among the 3 cameras that stay free, so recording with them needs $19.99 once. $7.99 / month is the same unlock plus cloud backup. No watermark, no ads.
